Eliminating Evil in Thomas More's Utopia Thomas More's Utopia is in many ways a very hopeful book; it implies that humans can be good if put in the right environment. Many people would argue that this could never happen; that the inequalities and injustices in our world are a product of human nature. Thomas More however would argue that rather than being a product of human nature, they are a product of the corruption within society. Thomas More believed that although humans may be inherently evil, if put in the right environment this tendency can be corrected. He develops the idea of the right environment; it is Utopia, a place where people are honest and equal because of the way that society is structured. Utopia is as close to the ideal society as possible because it assumes and accepts that its inhabitants are not perfect; the starting premise of the society is that human nature is dishonest and selfish. The laws in Utopia are constructed in a manner that makes immoral action absurd. Schools and the everyday structure of life are used to educate its population to think morally without even questioning it. Utopia operates on the assumption that people have and will always act in their own best interests and, then, the laws and institutions create a climate where the best interests of the community as a whole also correspond to those of the individual. Thomas More was an extremely religious person and this can clearly be seen in the way that he structures the laws and everyday life of Utopia. Using this organization he effectively eliminates all seven of the deadly sins, because of their absence Utopian society shapes its citizens to be upstanding people and obey the many rules without resentment. It does this by making ... ..., greed and envy with the abolishment of private property. He then rids Utopian society of gluttony with the way that they eat their meals, and sloth with hard work and a well-structured day. Finally he gets rid of wrath and lust with the Utopians policies surrounding war and marriage. All of these morals are reinforced by more laws than just those listed above; such as how the rules about politics also stop people from being greedy. The plethora of rules and structure built into Utopian society may seem excessive but every one of them serves its purpose and causes the Utopians to act morally. In essence, in Utopia a citizen must make a choice: would one rather live in a society full of corruption, poverty, death and inequality or in one with many rules, some of which even hinder people's personal freedoms but where everyone is well-fed, treated fairly and equal.

I didn’t have to, but I did. It was an order, what other choice did I have? I was merely a low level officer; the power was in Hiroto’s hands. She broke the camp rules, outside dealings, but did she? It was medicine to save innocent women, innocent women who have been caught up in a war for power, which has resulted in the women becoming the powerless, and me the powerful. Each day I have to dig deep, keep on digging I tell myself, for reasons to be here; pride, family honour, dignity for my people, remember what father said; Japanese are the ones who made the Europeans rich, yet for hundreds of years the Europeans looked down upon us, now it’s Japan’s turn, still, my moral conscience has clouded my mind to the atrocities that I have seen, a short time ago I was a teacher of a class with half Japanese and half European, and they couldn’t see any differences, they looked to the inside, why can’t these officers look to the inside, morality in c hildren is a quality that is needed now, yet I see the children in the camp being bashed by that brute Tomiashi, I want to help, but Japan is now powerful, Japan must prevail. By Fergus Neal Statement of Intention Upon taking a wider viewing of the film and seeing the obvious conflicts at play, I forced myself to look deeper and see the not so obvious conflicts that are omnipresent in the bystander characters. I chose to write a creative piece from the perspective of one of the guards who only features shortly in the film, has no name, but can be noted for saying a small but intriguing â€Å"sorry† to Daisy when she attempts to give Susan water, as if the emotion is starting to come to effect within him, and in citing this I chose to write a creative piece on his perspective and the inner conflict as well as conflict with the whole situation that he has faced that has culminated in him showing humility and apologizing to Daisy for not being able to allow water to be given to the tortured Susan. I chose to write in a formal way, but with a creative sense of writing present throughout which allowed me to delve deeper and actually place myself in this man’s shoes. My piece is for the audience of my teacher and fellow class mates as they should be able to comprehend the ideas that I am trying to convey through having seen, and understood the key aspects of the film. My project will focus on the GHG reduction and sustainability efforts from the members and affiliates of the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium. The project will also focus on the works of PERC members to enhance the sustainability of the communities. I was provided with a spreadsheet which is used as a survey about Greenhouse Gas CAP by the founder of PERC- Mr. Donald Brown. This spreadsheet includes question about each school’s greenhouse gas inventory and contract information of its sustainable coordinator. However, the spreadsheet still lacks a lot of information on the GHG reduction target and community works. Thus the initial part of my work is to collecting the information of the two categories listed above from school representatives. It is really necessary to collect the information on the GHG reduction target of each school since one of the main goals of this project is to help PERC to understand what each of its member is working on. L'etranger In L'etranger, an existentialist novel written by Albert Camus, the reader begins to discover that women are treated abusively or poorly. The main character in L'etranger, Meursault, views women as lesser than men; which ultimately conveys how women were thought of in Africa for that time period. In the second chapter, the reader first begins to get an idea of Meursault character, and his feelings towards women. After swimming with Marie Cordona, who once worked as a typist at Meursault office, he invites her to the cinema. This is very inappropriate, as his mother had died only a few days earlier. During the film, Meursault proceeds to fondle Maries breasts, and eventually kisses her. Shortly after the movie, Marie comes with Meursault back to his flat. This shows that Meursault thinks that women are merely in his life for pleasure; and no greater meaning such as love. On page 38, Marie asks if Meursault loves her; and he simply told her that it didn't mean anything, but he didn't think so. This emphasizes how Meursault does not believe in love, and does not like Marie for anything but a physical relationship, and possibly and as something to do. The way in which Meursault feels about women is not uncommon for this time period, as there were much more important things in life such as holding down a job and a daily routine than things such as loving someone. Most men in Algiers at this time only lived their lives, and did not think that women could be anything greater than an object or for physical reasons. Another example of how Meursault does not consider women as equals, but as lesser people, is when Marie asks if Meursault wanted to marry her. Meursault responds by saying that didn't mind and that they could if she wanted to. She then goes on to ask if he loves her and again he says that it didn't mean anything, but he probably didn't. Marie also said that marriage is a serious matter, but Meursault only said ?No'. This shows that not only does he not think that love is unimportant, but he also thinks that marriage doesn't mean anything. If Meursault does not care about love or marriage, then it shows that he also cares little for women, and in this case Marie. When Meursault and Marie are on the landing listening to Raymond beat one of his mistresses, Marie asks Meursault to fetch a police officer, but Meursault said that the didn't like policemen. This shows that Meursault didn't care that a woman was being hurt, because he would not even consider getting a policeman to stop the fight. Also, when Raymond asks Meursault to act as a witness, Meursault agrees to say that the woman was cheating on Raymond. By telling the police this, it got Raymond off the hook, and also showed that the policemen thought that it was all right to punish a woman if she had cheated on Raymond. Again, this emphasises the womens position in society.
